{"id":3881,"date":"2020-09-12T21:06:36","date_gmt":"2020-09-12T17:06:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tsayg.am\/?p=3881"},"modified":"2020-09-12T21:06:36","modified_gmt":"2020-09-12T17:06:36","slug":"more-than-50-killed-at-collapsed-gold-mine-in-eastern-congo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tsayg.am\/en\/more-than-50-killed-at-collapsed-gold-mine-in-eastern-congo\/","title":{"rendered":"More than 50 killed at collapsed gold mine in eastern Congo"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"html-content\">\n<p>More than 50 people are dead after landslides collapsed three artisanal gold mining wells near the city of Kamituga in eastern Congo\u2019s South Kivu province on Friday,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/250f3b3a2cd0b1542fae26d1fc68814d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">AP\u00a0<\/a>reported, citing officials.<\/p>\n<p>Heavy rains for days led to the disaster.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe diggers and the transporters of the stones were swallowed up by the waters,\u201d said the Kamituga mayor, Alexandre Bundya. \u201cA team of rescuers with motor pumps came to recover the bodies of the victims.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Diwa Honor\u00e9, who survived the tragedy, said more than 50 people had been in the three wells, which are about 50 meters (54 yards) deep.<\/p>\n<p>Artisanal mining quarries are often unsafe in eastern Congo and the Kasai region. Women and children also work in the mines to make ends meet.
